Fall 2004

A Message From Your President

In July, the Board of Directors met in Harrisburg for their quarterly meeting, as scheduled.  In addition to reviewing claim appeals and attending to administrative business, the Board discussed enhancements, which will provide additional incentive for current members to increase their membership and for non-members to join the BR&CF. We anticipate that this offer will come to fruition in the not-too-distant future, so watch for updates in the “Highball.”

The Board also set aside time to select the 2004 Photo Contest winners.  Congratulations to those selected, and thank you to all who participated in the event.

Winners’ names are listed further down in this “Highball,” and the winning photographs will be reproduced in the 2005 BR&CF wall calendar, which will be mailed to all active members in November.

By the time this issue of the “Highball” reaches our members, summer will be drawing to a close and your children will likely be hearing school bells once again.

For those members whose children will be seniors in high school this year, as well as those whose children are already in college, we recommend that you read the article where we announce the commencement of the 2005 Luther G. Smith Scholarship Program.

We frequently receive letters from our previous scholarship recipients telling us how much this support has helped them.  Some have been better able to focus on their studies due to having to work less hours.  For others, this financial assistance makes college a reality rather than a dream.

In closing, I would like to remind you that any member of the BR&CF may sign up a friend or co-worker.  If you have questions, feel free to give us a call.

Keep in mind that the BR&CF still provides the best job income protection available.  We encourage anyone who is in the market for job income protection to “shop and compare.”  We feel that the BR&CF’s job income protection will be the obvious choice!

Keep safe.

2005 Luther G. Smith Scholarship Program

Commences October 1, 2004

We are pleased to announce the commencement of the 2005 Luther G. Smith Scholarship Program.  Applications will become available on October 1, 2004 and may be obtained by completing the form on the back of your newsletter and mailing it to the address listed on our home page or send us an e-mail that includes your member number and a telephone number where you can be reached.  Applications may also be requested by telephoning our office.

Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the eligibility requirements outlined on the “Clip and Save” Reference Guide on this page.  You will note that high school students must be entering their senior year this Fall to apply.  Your child, 27 years of age or younger and already enrolled in college, perhaps even graduate school, is also eligible to apply.

Luther G. Smith Scholarship winners may receive financial assistance through this program until they achieve the degree level sought at the time of the initial scholarship award, not to exceed four years.  To continue to be eligible, the recipient must remain a full-time student in an accredited post-secondary school and maintain a 3.0 grade point average.  The sponsoring BR&CF parent must be an active member of the BR&CF “In Good and Regular Standing.”

Parents, please note that in order for your child’s application to be considered, all parts of the application must be completed in entirety.  The Scholarship Committee thoroughly evaluates the applications and, based on the information provided therein, awards the scholarships to the most deserving applicants.

The deadline for receipt of applications and all required documentation in the BR&CF office is March 1, 2005 .  It is imperative to note that applications received after the March 1, 2005 deadline will not be considered.

Don’t delay!  Take a few minutes right now to contact the BR&CF office and request an application for your child.

Frequently Asked Questions?

Q  I’m currently being “Held Out of Service” pending investigation.  When should I expect to receive my “Held Out of Service” benefits?

A:   As a rule of thumb, we process claims immediately following receipt of all of the required documentation, which includes the First Notice Claim form, Official Notice of Investigation, Official Notice of Discipline, copy of the Transcript of Investigation or a copy of the signed waiver.  When applicable, we may also accept a Notice of FRA Revocation (not to be confused with a Notice of FRA Suspension).

Please note that we cannot process your claim for “Held out of Service” benefits prior to actual discipline being assessed, which occurs after the formal investigation or upon signing a “Waiver” accepting discipline.

Member J. B. Lawson Receives Long-Awaited Pancreas Transplant

You may recall an article published in the Summer 2003 issue of the “Highball” concerning Member J. B. Lawson of Brazil, Indiana.  Brother Lawson, a CSX employee, was born with Type 1 juvenile onset diabetes.  He was seriously ill and in need of a pancreas transplant when we informed you of his plight.

We thought you might like to hear Brother Lawson’s good news.  He did indeed have his transplant and is recuperating remarkably.  Instead of an estimated two week stay in the hospital, he was released in six days and is hopeful of returning to the railroad on yard duty in the near future.  His blood sugar levels are normal!

Brother Lawson has had a boost in energy and feels great.  He is even able to enjoy food such as orange juice and chocolate cake that he had to avoid during his lifetime struggle with diabetes!  Brother Lawson cheerfully remarks, “It’s hard to keep a good railroader down!”

G. E. Welker Takes Top Prize in 2004 Photo Contest

In addition to having his photograph, “VIA Canadian at Banff Station,” reproduced in the BR&CF’s 2005 wall calendar, Greg Welker snared the coveted grand prize of $300 in cash.  Brother Welker resides in Berkeley, California, and has been a BR&CF member since 1972.

Other photo contest winners, whose names are listed below, have each been mailed a check for $150 and will also see their photographs reproduced in the calendar, complete with photo credits.  Congratulations to all of the winners!

We would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s photo contest.  In the spirit of friendly competition, you have contributed to what we believe will be another great BR&CF wall calendar!  The calendar is now being produced for mailing in November.
