WINTER 2005

A message from your president

Winter is here and 2005 is just about history!

In reviewing our performance over the past year, I can say with confidence that we have done well.  The BR&CF has helped thousands of railroad families throughout North America.  We have also realized an increase in our member numbers.  I attribute that to the railroads’ continued efforts to punish their employees with unreasonable periods of suspension and the efforts of some very active members who have helped spread the word – “BR&CF offers the most benefits for the least cost.”

Keep in mind that all active members will receive a detailed financial report on the past fiscal year with their proxy packet in March.

Listed in this newsletter are the names of several members who were appointed as Terminal Presidents.  These members have taken an active interest in the Organization by obtaining new members and assisting existing members.  We are always seeking members to participate in our Obtainer Program.  Keep in mind that we don’t employ any salesmen.  Rather, we rely on our members to obtain (refer) new members to help strengthen the “Fund.”   This allows us to maintain more benefits for our members at a reduced cost.  If you don’t know of anyone in your area who has information available about the BR&CF and you have an interest in becoming involved, give us a call.  Several large terminals could use attention.  Help your co-workers while helping yourself.

This is the last issue of the “Highball” before the holidays.  On behalf of the officers, directors, staff and the Myers family, may you have the happiest of holidays and a very prosperous New Year.

R. J. Myers

International President

Your Membership Card Please . . .

For Admittance Fee Discounts at Various Facilities

Nearly two years ago, the BR&CF began issuing membership cards to its members.  In addition to the convenience of having your membership information readily accessible when you need to contact the BR&CF, the card will enable you to obtain discounted admission fees at various facilities throughout the United States and Canada.  Discounts vary, ranging from free admission for BR&CF members to discounts for the member’s entire family.

These arrangements have been made through the North American Railway Foundation (N.A.R.F.).  Specific discount information can be viewed on that organization’s website at www.narfoundation.org

Monthly Payment Coupon Booklets Mailed to Direct Dues Payers in November

If you pay your dues directly with a coupon, you may have already received your monthly payment coupon booklet for 2006.  If you do not receive yours by mid-December, please give us a call.

It is very important that your dues payment reach us no later than the last work day of the month prior to the month for which the payment is owed in order for your membership to remain “In Good and Regular Standing.”

Example:  If your dues are currently paid through the month of December 2005, payment for the month of January 2006 must be received in our office on or before December 30, 2005, the last work day of December.  See Article VII of your BR&CF Constitution.

BR&CF Wall Calendar

Mailed to Each Active BR&CF Member

By the time you receive this newsletter, we hope you have received your copy of the BR&CF wall calendar, which was slated to be sent to all active BR&CF members in November.  We think you will enjoy the calendar as it features winning photographs from this year’s photo contest.

Calendars for members who have recently joined the BR&CF may not have been sent out with the initial mailing.  Those members will receive a calendar in the near future.

Planning to Attend the 2006

Annual Meeting of the Members?

The 2006 Annual Meeting will commence at 10:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) on April 22, 2006 in the BR&CF office in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  As a member of the BR&CF, you are entitled and welcome to attend.

If you are planning on being present, now is the time to make your hotel arrangements.  Once again, the Spring Carlisle Collector Car Swap Meet and Corral in the neighboring community of Carlisle will be held during the same weekend as the BR&CF Annual Meeting.  This world-renowned event brings a huge influx of collector car aficionados into the area, making it difficult to find accommodations.

In anticipation of this event, we have reserved a block of rooms at a local hotel.  By calling the BR&CF office, you may reserve one of these rooms at a reduced rate.  Since you will be responsible for your own expenses, please be prepared to provide a credit card number to hold the room.

You may even be interested in extending your visit to Harrisburg so that you can visit other local areas of interest, including the Gettysburg Battlefields, the Strasburg Railroad and the National Civil War Museum.  We are located just 45 minutes from the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country and 15 minutes from Hershey.  Of course, you may want to visit the car swap and corral in Carlisle.

It is important that you notify the Principal Office if you plan to attend the Annual Meeting.  Seating requirements will need to be set up in advance, making it necessary to have an accurate count of attendees.

Last Reminder

Deadline for Submission of Luther G. Smith Scholarship Applications is March 1, 2006

If you are the parent of a high school senior or a child who is already in college, March 1, 2006 is one deadline you won’t want to miss.  Applications for the Luther G. Smith Scholarship Program and all supporting documentation must be received in the BR&CF office by that date.

Since the next “Highball” won’t be mailed until February, we are reminding you now of the deadline so that your child will have plenty of time to submit an application.  Each year we stress the importance and finality of this deadline.  Sadly, we still receive some late applications.  Please, please note that applications received after the deadline will not be considered.  Our goal at the BR&CF is for every eligible student to submit his/her application in a timely manner so that he/she may participate in this worthwhile program.

Details on the Luther G. Smith Scholarship Program were provided in the Fall issue of the “Highball.”  If you no longer have your copy, you may view it on our website at www.brcf.org.  Of course, the details are also spelled out in the application packet.

Requesting an application is easy – simply complete and mail us the form on the back of this newsletter.  You may also call us at 1-800-233-7080 or e-mail us at brcf@brcf.org.  Please provide the sponsoring member’s name and member identification number as well as the mailing address where the application should be sent.
