News Flash - First dues increase in over 50 years!

The carriers have assessed discipline at record high levels for many months. We have fought against a dues increase but the carriers have left us no alternative.

We will restructure the method for calculating and administering member dues. On October 1, 2008 we will cease the use of multiple “classes” of memberships and the traditional ratio of $1 in dues for $3 in daily benefits. The dues increase will be applicable to October 2008. Payroll deduction of dues to be applied to October will occur prior to October 1st.

The ratio and classes will be replaced by a simpler dues structure based on $10 increments. Dues applicable to October 2008 and subsequent months will be $4.50 for each $10 increment. All members will be automatically advanced to the nearest higher membership level that is a multiple of 10 and their dues will automatically be adjusted. (Our members who are now at $201 a day in benefits are the exception. They will be automatically reduced to $200 and the dues adjustment will be made.) If a member decides that the automatic adjustment to the nearest higher level does not meet their needs they may opt to reduce to the nearest lower level by contacting our office.

Letters were mailed to every member in June that advises of the dues increase on an individual’s membership. There are many different member situations that must be addressed. The letter that you have, or will receive, is specifically tailored to your individual situation and will provide details regarding the impact on your membership. It is important that you have that letter to refer to if you contact the office.

Revised Constitutions will be mailed to each member in September.

It is with great reluctance that we implement this dues increase and restructuring. We trust that you understand the necessity of this action. You are an important part of the Fund and we do not take your participation in the Fund for granted. Our priorities are to remain affordable and deliver the very best service.

Even after an increase BR&CF monthly dues remain significantly lower than the monthly amount charged by major competitors. Compare monthly rates, days of benefit eligibility, accidental death and dismemberment benefit, retirement benefit and scholarships and I know that you will determine that the BR&CF is clearly the best deal.
